On March 15, 2023, a small delegation of the KLIMNEM project was in Valdivia and presented the KLIMNEM project to the staff and students of the Universidad Austral de Chile. More about the visit in Valdivia can be found here (in Spanish).

Part of the KLIMNEM team crossed the border from Argentina into Chile on February 25-26 to establish possible areas in the Valle El León for a westward extension of the El Manso Valley transect. With a westward extension, the humidity gradient can be extended and the entire range in the west-east extent of Nothofagus dombeyi can be covered. Besides several other evergreen deciduous trees like Laureliopsis philippiana we encountered very large specimens of N. dombeyi in Valle El León. To present the KLIMNEM project in the region and to exchange ideas, a workshop entitled "KLIMNEM Workshop - Sharing research interests, ideas and perspectives for the future" (program) was held on February 22-23. Besides first KLIMNEM results, institutions from the region presented projects and results (among others Prof. Dr. Thomas Kitzberger, Universidad Comahue, Bariloche, Argentina and Joseline Rose, Instituto Forestal, Valdivia, Chile). An intensive discussion at the end of the 1st day and a field trip to different experimental plots and forest stands on the 2nd day promoted the exchange between the scientists and should be a first impulse for long-term cooperations. More information about the workshop is available here (in Spanish). The following picture gallery gives some impressions of the workshop days...

The beginning of 2023 was dominated by field work and data collection. From January to March 2023, a large part of the project team was on the road in the study area to collect data in the 2nd transect near the community of El Bolsón. Find some impressions below.

After regular virtual meetings since the start of the KLIMNEM project in September 2021, part of the project team met in Patagonia in February 2022 to discuss the intensive field work and to explore the first transect in El Manso Valley (Río Negro province). Information about the meeting is available here (in Spanish).

From 03rd to 16th  November 2019, a Summer School funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) took place in Esquel (Chubut Province, Argentina). The theme of the event was the implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals in Patagonia. The value of Patagonian forests and other large-scale natural landscapes for climate change mitigation was intensively discussed. The Summer School also served as a preparation for the KLIMNEM project. For more information, please visit the pages of the HAWK research group "Latin America".
